Description

The former hospital at Brock Barracks was built in 1877 and designed by Major HC Seddon, with supervision by Major Flint. It is constructed from red brick with yellow brick bands, moulded brick heads, and stone dressings, featuring truncated ridge stacks and a tiled cross-gable roof. The building has a double-depth plan with an administrative area at the north end and a ward at the south, which includes a corner sanitary tower.

The exterior is two storeys high with a three-by-three window arrangement. It is an asymmetrical block with yellow sill and lintel bands, and a moulded brick transom band. The administrative end has paired gables to the north and a cross gable on each side, while the ward range is gabled to the south, all with coped gables on moulded kneelers. The tall, narrow windows have small-paned sashes, transoms, and cambered heads. The square sanitary tower at the southeast corner features narrow 4/4-pane sashes and a parapet with bracketed coping. There is a mid-20th century extension to the side of the central west doorway, designed in the same style.

Inside, the space is plain, with the ward divided to form classrooms. Historically, this building is an example of a Localisation hospital that included orderlies' rooms, offices, and two cross-lit wards, built for the Reading Localisation depot. It represents a standard single-ward adaptation of the pavilion plan, complete with a characteristic sanitary annexe for a brigade depot. This hospital is one of the two most complete surviving depots, alongside Bodmin, and reflects the changes brought about by the Cardwell reforms, which aimed to redistribute barracks across the country to strengthen local connections and aid recruitment.
