Description

The Royal Berkshire Regiment Cenotaph is a memorial made of Portland stone, located on a rectangular stone platform with three steps in a lawned area of Brock Barracks. At the top, there is a plain tomb chest with a moulded cover, upon which stands a stone urn supported by four pillars. The tomb is set on a three-staged base, which is positioned on a shaft that is set back towards its upper section. Beneath this is a two-stage base featuring cyma recta moulding at the foot of the shaft.

The cenotaph has minimal decorative elements. Carved stone bosses with laurel designs, suspended by stone fillets, are located at the upper sides of the shaft on either end. Each side of the memorial displays two large painted stone flags adorned with laurel wreaths encircling the tops of the flagpoles and laurel swags. The west side features the King’s Colour, while the east side displays the Regimental Colour. A niche on the north side of the memorial lists the names of the fallen.

The inscriptions on the north side above the wreath read "MCMXIV/ +/ MCMXVIII," and below the wreath, it states "TO THE/ MEMORY OF/ OFFICERS/ WARRANT OFFICERS/ NON-COMMISSIONED/ OFFICERS AND MEN/ OF THE/ ROYAL BERKSHIRE/ REGIMENT." The south side inscriptions below the wreath read, "THIS MEMORIAL/ WAS ERECTED BY/ PAST AND PRESENT OFFICERS/ AND MEN OF/ THE ROYAL BERKSHIRE REGIMENT/ AND THEIR RELATIVES/ IN MEMORY OF/ THE 353 OFFICERS AND/ 6375 OTHER RANKS OF/ THE REGIMENT/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ RE-DEDICATED/ TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE 93 OFFICERS AND/ 974 OTHER RANKS OF/ THE REGIMENT/ WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945."
