Description
Anson Barrack, located at Brock Barracks, is a soldiers' barrack built in 1877. It was designed by Major H.C. Seddon from the War Office, with Major Flint as the supervising engineer. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring yellow brick sill and lintel bands, moulded brick heads on the ground floor, and stone heads on the first floor. It has a truncated end gable, rear lateral and ridge stacks, and a tiled roof.
The barrack has a single-depth layout with rooms on either side of a central dogleg stair, accommodating non-commissioned officer (NCO) rooms and ablutions. The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical arrangement of windows, consisting of eight windows on the outer sides and three in the centre. The yellow sill and lintel bands, along with a moulded brick band below the window heads, enhance its appearance. The end gables are coped and supported by moulded kneelers, while the central gables feature paired windows with a two-centre arched tympanum and patterned brick infill. An arched entrance beneath a brick balustrade is flanked by these gables, with "ANSON" inscribed above the door. The rear of the building has matching windows and a pair of ablution bays in the centre.
Inside, the former dormitories are located on either side of the central dogleg stair. This barrack is an example of a standard design used for Localisation depots, implemented by local engineer officers. The Cardwell reforms aimed to redistribute barracks across the country to foster local connections and aid recruitment. Anson Barrack, along with Bodmin, is recognized as one of the two most complete surviving depots from this period.
