Description
The Former Plain-an-Gwarry Methodist Chapel is a 19th-century building, constructed in 1884 by James Hicks of Redruth. This former Primitive Methodist chapel features granite rock-faced walls with a granite ashlar front and is topped with a slate roof.
The chapel has a galleried auditorium with its entrance located at the southeast end, showcasing an Italianate style. The exterior includes a two-storey front with a rusticated ground floor, which features a central elliptical arched doorway flanked by pilasters and small round-headed windows. The advanced end bays have round arch doorways with panelled doors. Above, there is a moulded stringcourse and a superimposed order of pilasters on the first floor, which support large round arch plate-tracery windows. The central window rises into the gable above the entablature of the pilasters, while the end bays are advanced with large corner towers that have balustrades and pinnacles. The gable also features a pinnacle. The side elevations are simpler, consisting of five bays with pilaster buttresses, stringcourses, and segmental headed windows. Notably, the northwest gable has a rose window. The interior has not been inspected.
