Description

A row of four houses, originally in two matching pairs, dating from the early to mid-19th century and subsequently altered to become offices and three houses. The construction is of cross-wall design, with stone cross walls and slate-hung front and rear walls, topped with slate roofs and brick chimneys. The buildings follow a rectangular double-depth plan, divided into two halls adjoining each pair. The row is two storeys high and has 4+4 bays, though Nos. 9 and 10 are slightly lower than Nos. 7 and 8. The plinth is of dressed granite blocks, with channelled granite facing the cross walls. Each pair has symmetrical facades, with coupled doorways in the centre, featuring simple architraves with plain friezes and shallow dentilled cornices (missing from No. 7). The recessed doorways have overlights; the door to No. 7 is panelled, while the others have been altered. Each house has one window at ground floor and two above, primarily of 4-paned sash windows (with the exception of No. 9, which has 12- and 16-paned windows on the first floor). There are projecting eaves and brick chimneys at the gables of each pair. The rear of the buildings has various sashed windows with glazing bars. The interiors were not inspected.
