The Change House And Adjoining Walls

The Change House and adjoining walls is a former inn that later served as a changing house for bathing in the harbour, along with the adjoining harbour walls. It dates from the early 18th century and was remodeled in the late 19th century. The building features painted granite rubble walls and a steep dry Delabole slate roof with a brick axial chimney located towards the left.

The structure has a single depth range that was remodeled in the 19th century, possibly originally a two-room house with an all-room plan at either end. The roof was heightened in the late 19th century. The building is two storeys high and has a slightly irregular four-window front facing roughly south. There is a small wing at the front towards the right, which is linked to the Steward's House.

On the far left, there is a projecting shopfront with small panes and sidelights, and a doorway to its right with a large hood over both. Slightly to the right is a large doorway that provides access to the ground and first floors. The windows are small rectangular openings fitted with various sashes, including late 18th-century sashes or casements. Above the shopfront is a 12-pane hornless sash window from the early 19th century.

The interior has not been inspected. The north wall is built over a sea-defences retaining wall, and to the right of the rear wall are tall rubble walls with lean-tos against them. This building is depicted in a watercolor from 1805 titled 'The Sugar Loaf Inn'.
