Merthyr Farmhouse And Adjoining Former Coach House And Cottages

Merthyr Farmhouse, along with an adjoining former coach house and cottages, dates from the early 19th century. The building features roughly coursed rubble walls with granite dressings and a hipped slurried scantle slate roof with projecting eaves. There are brick chimneys located on the left-hand (south) wall, the axial wall towards the right, and the rear wall of the rear wing. The gutters are made of cast iron and have an ogee profile.

The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan, consisting of two nearly equal rooms at the front, with a cross passage and stair between them, and a one-room plan integral wing at a right angle to the rear right. Behind this wing is a 19th-century former coach house, which is connected to a pair of one-room plan cottages beyond. The front (east) cottage has been used as a shop at some point.

The exterior of the farmhouse is three stories tall, while the other structures are two stories. The east front of the house is nearly symmetrical with three windows and a doorway slightly left of the center. The round-headed doorway features chamfered granite rustications, with a 20th-century door and fanlight. The ground floor has large late 19th-century horned sash windows, while the upper floors retain original hornless sashes with glazing bars. The first-floor sashes are taller, and the middle opening on the second floor is blind. The north front is also symmetrical with three windows, although the left-hand openings are blind. The upper floors have original sashes, while the ground floor features horned copies.

The interior has not been inspected. The farmhouse is similar in many ways to Carne Farmhouse and may have been built by the same builder.
