Description

5/16 Gonitor Farmhouse and adjoining - buildings to north
- II
Farmhouse. Probably C17 but may incorporate earlier walling and extended and altered. C18. Slatestone and cob with grouted scantle slate roof probably originally thatched and brick chimneys. Originally 2 room plan with wide through passage, early mid C18 wing to rear lower end and later C18 outshut filling angle with early C19 buildings adjoining wing. 2 storey, 4 window front with 2 storey contemporary porch off centre to right lower end. One wide ground floor C20 bow window and 2 first floor sashes to left of porch. Ground floor window to right of porch with window over both 20-pane sashes. 20-pane sash to first floor left has pane dated 1754, straight joint evidence suggests that front was partly rebuilt probably early early C18 to give 5 window front including one to porch, then altered again later C18 and window (now blocked) inserted to left of porch. 2 blocked ground floor windows to side walls of porch and window over central door. Roof has gable with external splayed stack to left and roof hipped to right. Eaves raised with cob probably C18. Wing retains sash window to first floor with heavy ovolo moulded glazing bars probably early C18 with one-pane dated 177-. Reused sash of similar age to rear. Interior: retains some chamfered and stopped ceiling beams to upper end, and splayed fireplace with oven. Rounded recess in rear wall of lower end room (probably original stair turret position), evidence for lateral hearth and several 2-panel doors with HL hinges (one fielded) and cupboards with fielded panelled doors. Stone buildings with scantle slate roofs to rear form 'U'-shape with house partly enclosing cobbled courtyard. 2 storey building to north east corner has hipped roof and brick dove holes under eaves. Piggery adjoins with gothic brick arches to some openings. The C20 bay is not of merit, unlike the 20- pane sashes.
