Description
The Barley Sheaf Public House is a public house built in 1825, marked by an inscription and the initials RM. It features rendered walls with masonry on the lower floor and studwork above. The roof is fairly steep, covered with bitumen-grouted slate and topped with late 19th-century crested clay ridge tiles and brick end stacks. The front has wide, returned eaves with a moulded cornice. The building has a shallow plan that was later extended at the rear and stands three storeys tall with a nearly symmetrical three-window front on the second floor. The windows are mid to late 19th-century horned sashes set within moulded wooden architraves on the upper floor, and there are reveals on the other floors, including two tripartite sashes on the first floor. The central doorway features an original wooden doorcase with flat pilasters, a moulded and enriched entablature, and a four-panel door. The interior of the ground floor has been altered in the 20th century but still retains original fireplaces.
