Description
The milestone located to the north of No. 128 on Launceston Road (A388) is a late 19th-century stone structure. It is painted white with black lettering and has an obelisk shape, featuring tapering sides and a pyramidal cap. The milestone displays painted markings on two roadside faces indicating distances: "C / 1/2" and "L / 10".
This milepost was erected alongside a road established by the Callington Turnpike Trust, although it seems to have been installed after the Trust ceased to exist in 1874. It is positioned at the junction of the Launceston Trust's road and the Callington Trust's road. The milestone likely dates from after the Highways and Locomotive Act of 1878, which led to the use of painted signage instead of incised lettering. Its preservation, along with two similar milestones in the area, holds historical significance.
The milestone is designated at Grade II for being a representative example of a late 19th-century milestone in its original location and for its group value with other milestones along this route.
