Description
Chequettes Hall is a house, now used as retail premises, dating to circa 1719. A staircase projection was added around the 1730s, a rear wing was likely added in the late 18th century, reusing earlier stonework, and extended in the 1860s when the south side was remodelled. A shop front was added in 1959. The front is of granite ashlar, partly obscured by a glazed shop front, while side and rear walls are of rubblestone with granite dressings. The rear of the staircase projection is slate hung. The south front of the rear projecting wing is of granite ashlar. The roof is slate, with hipped ends.
Originally, the house consisted of two rooms with a cross passage, which was extended by adding a rear staircase wing. Additional service rooms were added to the rear in a projecting single-depth wing on the northwest, which was extended under a catslide roof towards the south. The main range is a three-storey building with a symmetrical five-window east front, featuring rusticated granite corner pilasters and plain granite strings. The ground floor has a 20th-century projecting glazed shop front with a flat roof, although cut stone flat arches remain visible to the original openings. These openings have been widened by amalgamating windows flanking the central entrance. The first floor has five 12-pane sashes without horns, set beneath cut stone arches with keystones. The second floor has five 9-pane sashes (with the top three panes fixed), without horns. A moulded and modillioned wooden eaves cornice runs along the top. On the right-hand side, there is a second-floor sash window of nine panes with heavy 18th-century glazing bars. A late 19th-century canted bay window is on the left-hand side, with two-light casements of pointed heads above it on the first and second floors. Two staircase windows are present in the projecting wing. The rear projecting two-storey wing has a slate and asbestos slate roof, with a gabled end to the east and a hipped end to the west. The granite south front has pointed-headed windows to the ground floor and a projecting single-storey porch. A reused greenstone two-centred arch with moulded jambs is also present. Further projecting wings extend to the rear, dating to circa the late 19th century.
Inside, the ground floor of the main range on the right-hand side retains a dentilled cornice and two 18th-century cupboards. On the left, ribbed plasterwork, remodelled circa 1880s, is contemporary with the addition of the bay window. The original staircase, dating to circa 1730s, has an elegant wreathed handrail, slightly moulded and ramped at the corners, turned balusters on square bases, and an open string with carved scroll brackets. A full dado rail, with pilasters, survives. The second floor of the main range retains a dado rail and fielded panelling in window bays. The site is possibly that of the manor of Callington (Chicketts Hall), and the Horndon family held a lease of Chequettes Hall from the 1720s until William Horndon built Pencrebar in 1848-49.
