Description
The Women's Institute is a town house that has been repurposed as an institute. It dates from the mid-18th century and was possibly remodeled in 1918. The building features stucco on rubble, with a mid-floor band, moulded architraves, and stepped keyblocks above large round-arched windows on the first floor. It has a steep asbestos slate roof with projecting eaves, hipped on the left side. The structure has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall, with a symmetrical three-window front. The first-floor windows are 1930s tripartite transomed wooden mullioned windows with glazing bars, double transoms, and concentric spoked fanlight heads. The central doorway is pilastered and has an open pediment on consoles that frame the name of the institute. Inside, the building retains a good quality 18th-century open-well staircase, which features turned balusters, a moulded closed string, square newel posts with caps, and carved consoles flanking the entrance to the stair hall and the stairs.
