Description
26 and 28 St Thomas Street are two townhouses, which may have originally been one house, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. The front is rendered on a rubble base and features a string course at the level of the first-floor meeting rail. The building has a steep asbestos slate roof with projecting front eaves over a moulded cornice, and a brick stack is located on the left side. The plan is shallow in depth with a rear wing on the left.
The houses are three storeys high and have a three-window range on the second floor. There is a blocked window on the second floor to the left, and the early 19th-century windows include sixteen-pane hornless sashes. On the first floor, there are two early to mid-19th-century twelve-pane sashes; the left-hand window is above a pair of 20th-century copy sashes, while the other window is above a single four-pane horned sash. There are two doorways, including a central open doorway (through-passage) between the windows and another doorway at the far left, both featuring 20th-century doors.
On the second floor towards the left, there is an incised stone that possibly comes from the former Glasney College, inscribed with the Lord's Prayer. The interior was noted in 1980 to have many 18th-century features, including two-panel doors, and it presumably retains an 18th-century pegged roof structure.
