Description

Carthew Cottage is an estate cottage, likely built in the early to mid-19th century in two phases. It is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings, featuring voussoirs above flat arches. The front roof is covered with dry slate, while the rear roof is bitumen-grouted, with both roofs having projecting eaves. The front eaves are supported by moulded wooden brackets. There is a brick stack at the left end of the front roof and dressed granite stacks at both ends of the rear roof. The building has a double-depth plan, consisting of one room at the front with an entrance hall to its right and two rooms at the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a two-window range and a one-window range set back on the right. It features original two-light casements with glazing bars and a six-panel door, where the top panels have been later glazed, located on the right side. The rear windows are later 19th-century horned sashes with glazing bars, except for a more square window on the ground floor right, which lacks inner horns and may be original. The interior has only been partly inspected, specifically in the back room.
