Range Of Outbuildings And Wall Attached To Rear Of 1 To 5 Barrow Park Flats

This is a range of outbuildings, including a sawmill and workshops, located at the rear of 1 to 5 Barrow Park Flats in Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. Built around 1890, the structures are made of sandstone rubble and feature slate roofs. The main part is a single-storey building that runs north to south, housing the sawmill, with an east to west range attached to the south for the workshops. The sawmill has an L-plan layout, with wood being brought in at the south end and machinery located along the inner wall.

A curtain wall connects the outbuildings to the rear of the stables, featuring a gateway to the north. This curtain wall is approximately 3 metres high and is constructed of rubble, leading to a pair of square gate piers topped with plain hipped roofs and fitted with 20th-century double gates.

On the inner side of the sawmill, which faces the stable rear yard, there are two single-storey outhouses. The doors of these outhouses have cover strips, and the windows feature brick segmental heads. The central section of the sawmill has a pitched roof that extends to house the machinery, with double doors for access. The east to west range includes five doors and four windows, all with vertical lights, and ends in a taller single-storey block with a hipped roof, which has two doors (one with an overlight) and a two-light casement window. The front outer end has a three-light casement, while the outer side features two two-light casements.

Inside the sawmill, there is a trackway for moving wood along the inner wall, with one original trolley still in place. The trackway continues onto a raised trestle at the north end of the building, which has a lower floor level for the sawpit, and a winch is located at the end of the trackway. The roof structure consists of tie beams and principal rafters.
