Description
Mill House, part of the Crumplehorn Inn, is a building that dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of painted stone rubble and features a slate roof with gabled ends. The original plan has been altered due to the removal of machinery, but the mill wheel remains on the left-hand gable end. The building is two storeys tall with an asymmetrical front that has two windows. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century two-light casement window with glazing bars and a part-glazed stable door to the right, both set beneath timber lintels. The first floor has two 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars and a row of pigeon holes beneath the eaves. The hybrid overshot mill wheel on the left-hand gable end was made by G.H. Harris of Wadebridge and replaces an earlier timber wheel. Originally known as Killigarth Manor Mill, the site is noted on Tithe Apportionment Maps from 1839. The last occupant was Zephaniah Job, who was a significant benefactor in Polperro and served as an advisor, accountant, and banker. The mill closed between 1923 and 1926. There are historical photographs of the mill, including one taken around 1910 by S de Burlet and earlier images from the 1860s by Lewis Harding.
