Description

Holy Well is a well house located on Landaviddy Lane in Polperro. It is believed to be dedicated to St Peter and may have medieval origins. The well is a field spring that issues from rock, although much of it is thought to have disappeared during road works in the 20th century. Above the well, there were once the ruins of the Chapel of St Peter of Porthpyre, which existed in 1392. In 1895, Quiller Couch described the spring as "never dry" and noted its reputation for special virtues, which has persisted despite the loss of the structure that once enclosed it. The spring continues to attract visitors seeking remedies for ailments, particularly eye problems, and it is believed that proper ceremonies can yield beneficial results.
