Description

The Lodge is a Grade II listed cottage ornee, built around the early 19th century. It features dressed freestone with dressed granite quoins and voussoirs. The roof is octagonal, thatched with wheat reed, and includes a roof dormer at the front and a central rectangular ashlar chimney with splayed corners. The building has an octagonal plan with a flat front that is set back within an open verandah, which is supported by wooden columns.

Inside, there are small living rooms on either side of a central lobby, with possibly small chambers originally located at the rear. The loft has likely been converted in the 20th century, and there is a small service room lean-to on the left side, probably dating from the 19th century. The structure is single-storey and originally had a symmetrical two-window north front, featuring a central pointed arched doorway flanked by pointed arched windows that rise to a higher level. The original panelled door and wooden Y-traceried and cusped windows with horizontal glazing bars remain, with a similar window on the right side wall. The four posts supporting the verandah, located under each roof hip, are 20th-century replacements of likely rustic originals. The rear right-hand window is an original 12-pane, 2-light casement. The Lodge is a virtually complete example of the Cottage ornee style.
