Description
The New Road Bridge, located at SW 703264 in Gweek, is a Grade II listed structure dating from the 17th century, as indicated on a map from 1696 at Lanhydrock. This bridge was built for a cart track over a stream that leads to the Helford River. It is constructed of granite rubble with roughly-hewn granite dressings. The bridge features two spans, with large roughly-hewn granite lintels that span the openings and form the road surface. It is thought to have originally been a clapper footbridge that was later widened to accommodate horse-drawn vehicles. Sources for this information include "Old Cornish Bridges" by Charles Henderson and Henry Coates.
