Description
Pophams is a farmhouse that dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed of pebbledashed stone and cob, topped with a slate roof featuring crested clay ridges, which replaced the original thatch. The building has a symmetrical layout with a central wide stair hall. To the left is a kitchen and to the right is a smaller parlour, both of which have gable stacks. A dairy is accessed from the kitchen under the stairs and occupies the rear third of the parlour bay. An added washhouse is located on the west gable. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with the entrance now through a newly added doorway in the west gable, featuring a four-panelled front door. The windows are 19th-century four-paned sashes, and there are brick stacks. The washhouse has a slurried slate roof and a gable stack.
Inside, the living kitchen has bead arris joists on the ceiling that support a boarded floor above. The stack has been altered to incorporate a cloam oven, which is not visible. There is a cast iron surround for a Cornish range, with the oven and fire replaced by a Rayburn. The stair has boarded partitions and splits either way at the rear wall. The dairy, which may have been added in the 19th century, has a blocked window under the stairs. The first floor features a boarded ceiling.
