Description

The former tannery, together with its boundary wall to the south and east, and gate piers to the south, is located on Fairmead Road, near Burraton Coombe. Dating to the 1843, as indicated by a doorway inscription, the tannery is a tall building with extensive louvered bays on the upper floor, situated between brick piers. The walls are constructed of rubble with slate courses featuring random blue stones. The roof is hipped and slate-covered. The front of the building has two windows positioned below relieving arches and a central, segmental-headed doorway leading to the road. An angled tower extension, likely a horse engine shed, projects to the south, alongside a square projection near the gates, which incorporate a Victorian Royal Mail letterbox in one of the gate piers. A boundary wall, approximately nine feet high and built of contemporary rubble, encloses the tannery site to the south and east.
