Description
The War Memorial in the churchyard of the Church of St Stephen is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War and the Falklands Conflict. It is situated in the north-west corner of the churchyard, near the St Stephen’s Hill entrance to the Grade I-listed church.
This memorial is made of granite and features a square shaft surrounded by four rough-hewn columns, each with circular bases and capitals. At the top, it has a square cornice and a short obelisk. The memorial rests on a plain square foot and a chamfered plinth that rises from a three-stepped square base. The entire structure is set on a semi-circular platform that is enclosed by a low semi-circular wall with rounded coping, which ends in short square pillars at both ends.
The names of the fallen are inscribed in leaded lettering on the shaft, with additional inscriptions on the foot and plinth. The west face features the inscription (NAMES) / TO THE HONOURED DEAD / 1914-1919 / YE THAT LIVE ON MID ENGLISH PASTURES GREEN / REMEMBER US AND THINK WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN. The south face lists the names of those who died in the Second World War, reading (NAMES) / 1939-1945, while the north face commemorates the Falklands Conflict with FALKLANDS / 1982 (NAME).
