Description

A house and barn, dating from around the mid-16th century. The lower end of the building on the south side was probably rebuilt in the mid-18th century, later converted into a barn, and then in the mid to late 20th century converted back into a private dwelling. A right-hand side extension was added in the mid to late 20th century. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with a slate roof featuring gable ends, and a slightly higher roof over the house on the right. There is a stone rubble stack to the left of centre, a rendered front lateral hall stack, and a rendered brick stack on the right-hand gable end of the 20th-century extension.

The original plan included a hall retained on the right, extended in the 20th century, and a staircase projection to the rear of the hall. The lower end was rebuilt in the mid-18th century. A through passage between the hall and the lower end was re-introduced in the late 20th century. The building presents an asymmetrical six-window front, with two storeys. Hardwood casements from the 20th century feature rounded heads. A 20th-century gabled porch shelters a 20th-century door. The right-hand range projects and has large granite quoins, with similar 20th-century casements arranged as two windows on each floor.

Internally, the hall was probably originally open, with a floor inserted around the mid-17th century. A fireplace in the front lateral stack was likely partly rebuilt, featuring a timber lintel with a slight chamfer. A clom oven is within the smoking chamber to the right. The hall features two heavily chamfered half beams with run-out stops, partly supported by two corbelled brackets projecting from the dividing walls. A central ceiling beam also has a heavy chamfer with ogee stops, along with slight intermediate beams featuring a series of scratch moulds running along the grain. All ceiling beams run in the same direction. Early 17th-century door frames – oak with 4-centred arches, mortice and tenoned – are found in the staircase projection and inner room beyond the hall. The inner room has heavy chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops and slight intermediate beams with scratch moulds. A staircase projection in the north-west corner of the hall contains stone rubble winder stairs with slate treads. At the top of the stairs is a fine 16th-century oak door with linen-fold panelling. A room above the hall has two raised cruck trusses with heavy curved principals, chamfered to collar level, one dovetailed into the principal. Cambered, chamfered collars sit above the principals. Trenched purlins are present, hidden by a plaster ceiling above collar level. The roof timbers are recently cleared and stained. A small blocked opening forms a niche in the apex of the gable at the lower end of the hall, possibly a smoke-hole. A room to the north contains a small granite fireplace in the north gable end with chamfered lintel and jambs.
