Description

The Old Smithy is a building that has been converted into a house, dating from around the 17th century. It is constructed of rubblestone and features a concrete tile roof with gable ends. There is a large rendered projecting rubblestone stack on the right-hand gable end and another rendered rubblestone stack on the left-hand gable end, which has a brick shaft. Additionally, there is a rear lateral stack with a brick shaft. The building is one room deep and has a long, low range.

The structure is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with four window openings, which contain 20th-century windows. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century window on the left side, accompanied by a timber plank door and a metal porch featuring a round-headed arch. To the right, there is another 20th-century window beneath a slate hood, a partly glazed door, and an additional 20th-century window. Above, there are four more 20th-century windows. The roof over the right-hand range is slightly lower than that over the left. There are also 19th-century extensions, both two storey and single storey, on the left-hand gable end. It is said that there are large granite fireplaces inside, although the interior has not been inspected. A photograph of 'Sandercock's smithy at Newbridge' from the 19th century can be found in Sheila Lightbody's "The Book of Callington," published in 1982, on page 55.
