Schoolroom To Townsend Methodist Church, Adjoining Outbuildings And Courtyard Walls

The building is the schoolroom of Townshend Methodist Church, a non-conformist chapel that has been in use since around 1871. It includes adjoining outbuildings and the front courtyard walls. The structure dates from the early 19th century and was extended in the mid-19th century. It features painted rubble walls and has a rectangular aisle-less plan with a vestry attached to the right gable end and a traphouse next to the vestry, both set back from the front. The building is single storey with three windows on the east front, which have pointed arched openings and original hornless sashes with intersecting glazing bars. The doorway is located to the left of the middle window. At the rear of the chapel, there are original 12-pane hornless sashes, and the vestry has a 16-pane hornless sash. The courtyard in front of the schoolroom and vestry is enclosed by painted low rubble-coped walls. There are round-headed granite monolithic gate piers and an iron gate at the gateway that aligns with the schoolroom doorway. The interior is very simple, featuring a boarded ceiling and plastered walls.
