Description

Sharon Methodist Chapel at Thornham Chapel Cross is a Methodist chapel and adjoining schoolroom built in 1849, with an addition in 1908. The early part of the building is constructed from random rubble, while the later section features coursed rubble blocks of irregular size and brick dressings at the corners. It has gabled slate roofs with crested clay ridges, a brick stack on the east side, and cast-iron gutters and downpipes. There is a weatherboarded timber-framed shed attached to the west, topped with a painted corrugated-iron sheeting roof.

The chapel, located on the left, has a rectangular plan with a blocked central entrance on the front. The 1908 schoolroom addition is set back on the right end and has a front doorway to the left. There is also an outshut set back further to the right, which features a lean-to at the front. In the 20th century, a weatherboarded shed was added to the left side of the chapel. Both the chapel and schoolroom are designed in a late Gothick style.

The main elevation facing the roadside is a single-storey, two-window chapel, with a single-bay schoolroom set back to the right. The windows have multi-paned casements in pointed-arch openings, with brick dressings and renewed concrete cills. Each window features intersecting Gothick glazing. The central door opening between the two halves has brick dressings and a plank door in a wooden frame with painted graining. The outshut to the right includes a three-light casement with horizontal glazing bars and two door openings with plank doors.

The interior was refitted in the mid-19th century and includes pews, a pulpit, dado panelling, a chimneypiece in the schoolroom, and additional joinery. A run of wrought-iron railings with hooped tops encloses a small graveyard at the front, featuring two gateways with iron finials in a matching style. The chapel is situated in an isolated yet prominent position along the roadside.
