Description

Townshend Methodist Church, along with its associated walls, gate piers, and gates, was built in 1871. The building features painted rubble walls complemented by dressed granite quoins, jambstones, sills, and lintels, with some slate sills and brick arches. It has a dry Delabole slate roof with gable ends, and the front gable is designed as a pediment.

The church has a square, aisle-less layout with a gallery on three sides, which was extended at the rear around the late 19th century to include an organ and vestry. The two-storey west entrance front showcases a central round-headed doorway flanked by two round-headed windows on the first floor, all beneath a pediment adorned with brick dentils at the cornice. A round-headed date plaque is positioned in the middle of the pediment, featuring dentils under the hoodmould. The side elevations each contain two windows per floor, with flat-headed windows on the ground floor and round-headed windows above, all original horned sashes with glazing bars, and the first-floor windows include fanlight heads. A war memorial is located in front of the church to the right.

Inside, the church features a contemporary round-ended gallery and rostrum supported by shaped brackets and Doric columns, along with original box pews. In front of the chapel, there are low coped walls with splat balustrades, with entrances on the middle and left sides, both marked by granite monolithic square-on-plan piers. The wrought-iron gates include a middle gate with a shaped top rail and scrolled acanthus detail, while the left gate is braced with spiked bars. There is also a similar gate with granite piers located at the rear left of the chapel.
