Description
The forecourt walls, stiles, and mounting block at Godolphin House date from the 17th century. They are constructed from granite rubble with dressed granite quoins, jambs, and copings. Two parallel walls extend forward from the main front of Godolphin House, forming two sides of the forecourt. Each wall is interrupted by a stile, which consists of a stone cattle grid flanked by two stone benches that were reused in the 17th century. The cheeks and backs of the stiles create a right angle with the forecourt walls.
To the east of the forecourt, there is an early 19th-century double privy with a symmetrical ashlar front featuring two doorways and a hipped scantle slate roof. On the outside face of the west forecourt wall, near the stile, there is a large mounting block with six steps. The walls are topped with steep-sided copings that have roll ridges. Inside the court, there is a wide strip of cobbling in front of the house and another leading to the west stile, which are remnants of a radiating pattern that also connected to the lodges.
