Description

This First World War memorial, dating from about 1920, incorporates additions commemorating the Second World War. Situated within the grounds of the Grade II-listed Townshend Methodist Church, it faces the Grade II-listed Schoolroom belonging to the Methodist Church. The memorial consists of a granite wheel-head cross rising from a tapering shaft, which itself sits upon a square plinth and a two-stepped base. Inscribed on the cross in black letters is the dedication "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY/ OF TOWNSHEND LADS/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919." Below this on the plinth are the names of the fallen, followed by the inscription “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.” The top step of the base slopes and bears the inscription "GREAT WAR 1939 – 1945" alongside further names.
