Description

The Rectory is a mid-18th century rectory, with extensions added in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The front is built of dressed and coursed slatestone, while the rest of the building is of slatestone rubble. The roofs are hipped and dry, covered with Delabole and scantle slate, with brick chimneys over the side walls. The building originally had a central stair plan with two rooms, but it has been extended to double depth and includes a wing attached to the southwest corner and a single-storey kitchen wing to the rear.

The east front has five windows and features 12-pane hornless sash windows with crown glass. The central doorway has a six-panel door with flush beaded bottom panels, fielded panels above, and glazed top panels, set within a wooden doorcase with dentils to the entablature. Flat slatestone arches are above the other openings, and granite sills are present. The eaves slightly project, and there are three raking roof dormers with 6-pane, horned sashes.

Inside, the original open-well staircase remains, with a heavy turned baluster (two per step) and a ramped mahogany handrail. Original moulded ceiling cornices are also present. The left room is largely original, featuring full-height wall panelling and an original fireplace surround with a pulvinated frieze and eared corners to the overmantle, forming a complete chimney piece. The shutters and architraves in the ground floor right room were replaced in the early 19th century, along with the fireplace surround. The roof structure and later additions were not inspected.
