Description

Darch Cottage and Trethewell Cottage are two adjoining cottages dating from the 18th century, with extensions to the rear in the 20th century. The walls are of cob, rendered in the 20th century. Darch Cottage, on the left, has a corrugated asbestos sheet roof, while Trethewell Cottage, on the right, has asbestos slates. The roofs are pitched across two levels, with brick chimneys positioned over the gable ends and the central party wall. The cottages were originally thatched. Each cottage comprises two rooms arranged around a central staircase.

The south front of each cottage is nearly symmetrical, featuring two windows and a central doorway. The doorways have 20th-century doors, and the windows are two-light casements. Darch Cottage retains its original outer frames and mullions, with ovolo mouldings. The interior of Darch Cottage includes original 18th-century pine muntin and plank partitions, and bowtell moulded ceiling beams. A fireplace in the left-hand room is partially built into a bank supporting the road. The roof structure and interior of Trethewell Cottage were not inspected. An old postcard photograph held by the NMR shows the cottages in the early 20th century, with thatched roofs and exposed cob walls.
