Description
The Church of St Stephen is a Grade II listed church located in Treleigh, Redruth, built around 1870. It features uncoursed killas rubble with granite dressings and has Delabole slate roofs adorned with ornamental slate verges and red ridging tiles. The church has a cruciform plan with shallow transepts and an apsidal chancel, along with a porch on the west end of the south side and a small vestry situated between the chancel and the north transept.
Designed in the Early English style, the church includes a plinth and diagonal buttresses with offsets. The low gabled porch is supported by diagonal buttresses and has two-centred arched doorways—one outer with a chamfered design in two orders featuring pyramid stops, and an inner doorway with a plank door equipped with elaborate hinges. Each side wall of the porch has a small lancet window, and the roof is steeply pitched with ornamental slate verge and cockscomb ridging tiles.
The nave contains three lancet windows on the south side and four on the north side, with two similar lancets and an oculus at the west end, topped by a gable bellcote. The short transepts each feature a two-centred arched three-light window with a cinquefoil in the head; the north transept has a gable chimney to the left of the apex, while the small gabled vestry on the left includes a two-light window. The semi-circular chancel has three lancets similar to those in the nave. Most of the windows retain their original latticed glazing and ferramenta, although some have been replaced with coloured memorial glass. The interior has not been inspected but is unlikely to have undergone significant alterations.
