Montrose House with Attached Front Wall and Railings

Montrose House is a house and shop with an attached front wall and railings, originating from the 18th century, with additions and alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries, incorporating materials from the 17th century. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite and brick dressings, topped with a slate roof featuring ridge tiles and gable ends. There are gable end stacks with brick shafts. The rear wing is made of painted stone rubble and cob, with a slurried scantle slate roof, also featuring ridge tiles and gable ends, and has a rubble shaft for the gable end stack.

The layout consists of a double depth plan house with a central entrance through a porch. The principal rooms are located to the front left and right, with shallow service rooms at the rear. The front and rear rooms to the left are used as a shop, likely added in the early 19th century. To the rear left is a two-room plan wing, with the end room heated by a gable end stack, which may be the oldest part of the house. In the mid-19th century, a garden wall with railings and a gate was added to the front of the house.

The exterior features two storeys and a symmetrical four-window front, with a central two-storey porch that has granite quoins. The porch contains a central 20th-century door with sidelights, flanked by 17th-century granite columns with moulded caps and bases, and has 20th-century glazed sides. The inner door is a 19th-century two-panelled door with an overlight. The porch was raised in height around the mid-19th century, now featuring a flat roof and a six-pane sash window at the front, suggesting it was originally an open porch. On the ground floor to the right, there are two six-pane sashes with brick segmental arches. The right side has a four-pane sash on the first floor to the left, while the left side has a 20th-century window on the first floor to the left. The left side also has a straight joint leading to the rear wing, which is two-storey and includes a 16-pane sash and a half-glazed door on the ground floor, with two four-pane sashes on the first floor and a 20th-century window at the end right and left. The interior is not accessible.
