Description
Hembal Manor is a house dating from the mid-to-late 19th century, with later 19th-century additions and 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings and has a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. The house has a plan that is asymmetrical with a double depth. The front of the house is symmetrical, featuring a central wing with a porch, with principal rooms to the front right and left, of equal size. There is another principal room to the rear right, and a service wing to the rear right which returns to form a range of outhouses to the rear, enclosing a small service courtyard to the left side of the rear.
The entrance front is two storeys and has a band course and quoins. It features a 1:1:1 bay arrangement with a central gabled wing. All windows are 19th-century plate-glass sashes. The central wing has a two-light window with round arches and keystones, and at first floor a gabled wooden oriel with plate-glass windows and a breather above. The right side of the wing has a two-panelled door with an overlight. The bay to the right has a two-light round-arched window at ground floor and a two-light window with a segmental arch at first floor, both with keystones. The bay to the left has a three-light round-arched window at ground floor and a three-light window with a segmental arch at first floor. The right gable end has a square gabled bay at ground floor with three round-arched lights; at first floor, there are two segmental-arched lights and a breather above. To the right, set back, is a 12-pane sash with sidelights and a segmental arch at ground floor, and a two-light segmental-arched window at first floor. Further to the right is the lower two-storey service wing with a band course and axial stack. The rear gable end of this wing features a 16-pane sash and a four-pane casement at ground floor, and a 20th-century window at attic level. The left end of the main range has an external stack and continues the band course. A 20th-century 12-pane window is located at first floor to the left. To the left, a gable is over the service range, with a 20th-century porch and a 19th-century 12-pane sash at ground floor, and a late 19th-century four-pane sash at first floor and another four-pane sash above. At the rear, there is a single-storey outshut enclosing the service yard with casements and a 20th-century door. The inner side of the service wing has a gabled brick porch with an inner plank door and two two-light 19th-century casements at first floor. The rear of the main range features a 20th-century porch and two small gables; the gable to the right has a 19th-century 16-pane sash. The interior was not inspected.
