Description
This is a Methodist chapel, built in 1829. It is located alongside courtyard walls and gate piers. The chapel is constructed from granite rubble with dressed granite accents, including quoins, jambstones, sills, voussoirs, lintels, a pediment string, and gable copings. It has a low-pitched roof covered in scantle slate, with coped gable ends. A simple triangular pediment sits atop the entrance front, which faces east. Cast iron ogee gutters are present.
The chapel's plan is rectangular, with a semi-circular gallery extending along three sides, serving the east (ritual), west, and entrance fronts. A later single-storey room was added to the west end. The symmetrical east front features a round-headed doorway with double doors and a fanlight, flanked by two original round-headed hornless sash windows lighting the gallery above. All are surmounted by a triangular pediment with a central blind oculus (likely intended for a former date plaque). The round-headed arches have projecting granite keystones, and the windows have integral fanlights. The side elevations are two-storey with two windows each, featuring circa late 19th or 20th century four-pane horned sashes in the original window openings.
The interior is largely original. The gallery has been reduced in height but retains original panelling to form canted ends, and is now supported by five original Doric columns. A complex moulded cornice runs beneath the gallery front, decorated with bead mouldings and scalloped corners on the rectangular panels. Original box pews remain at the east end of the chapel and in the gallery. A fine rostrum with a canted pulpit and short staircases on either side is also present. Two memorial windows with coloured glass are located in the west wall.
The building exemplifies an early 19th century Methodist chapel, adhering to a restrained classical style with detailing more characteristic of domestic architecture than ecclesiastical structures.
