Description
Treworgie Barton is a farmhouse dating to the late 16th and 17th centuries, with additions made around the 19th and 20th centuries at the rear. The walls are built from rendered cob and whitewashed slatestone rubble. Originally, the range was one room deep, with stacks at the gable ends and a large projecting lateral stack, which is now incorporated into a later addition to the south front. The front has four windows. The ground floor casements on the left and centre have been renewed with glazing bars; the window to the left has a granite lintel bearing the date 1586 and the initials “B.M.” (likely referencing Benet Mill, whose tomb chest is in the churchyard). A reset datestone to the left of that window displays the date 1648 and the initials "W.B." (referring to William Braddon, who has a monument in the church). The window to the right is a sash window with glazing bars. The upper-storey windows comprise four similar sashes. The rear outshut has a catslide roof, with two flat-roofed dormers added to the rear, west and east. A further outshut addition exists at the west gable end. The east gable end stack features a flat-arched, chamfered granite fireplace, possibly a reset feature. The lateral stack, now internal, includes granite set-offs and a projecting oven, with the fireplace blocked. The site was a manor recorded in the Domesday Book, and the ruins of a previous manor house, destroyed by fire, are reportedly located in a field to the south of the house. Duchy archive records state the building contained a “fair hall open to the roof and wainscoted half way with a parlour and one kitchen” in 1650.
