Description

Chy An Eglos is a house with an adjoining barn located in Stratton, dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The house is constructed from whitewashed rendered cob and has an asbestos slate roof, which was previously lower and thatched. It features a large stone chimney with a brick shaft on the right end and a rendered stack on the left. There is a room above a former cart entrance on the front left, which is slate hung with asbestos slates. The barn, dating from the 18th century, is made of cob and has a hipped slate roof.

The house has a two-room layout with a through passage and a single-storey addition at the rear right, forming an L shape. The barn adjoins this single-storey addition and extends to the rear. The accommodation has been expanded into the former cart entrance, and there is a room above. The building is two storeys high and has a roughly symmetrical appearance. The front has three windows, with a central six-panel front door, four of which are now glazed. The left ground floor window is a 20th-century timber sash, while the right window is an early 19th-century hornless sash that retains some crown glass, featuring five panes above ten panes. The right first-floor window is similar to the ground floor right window, and the left and central first-floor windows are 10-pane fixed windows from the 20th century.

At the rear right, there is a 17th-century ovolo-moulded two-light timber casement window on the first floor. Inside, the through passage has a slate floor, and the ground floor room on the right also has a slate floor, with heavy cross beams and a partially blocked massive fireplace that has a concealed fireplace beam. An early 19th-century staircase with stick balusters leads to the upper floor. The roof timbers were replaced in the late 20th century. The cob barn has an entrance on the south side and features a pegged collar rafter roof. The barn is included for its group value with the house.
