Description
Nether Bridge is a road bridge over the River Tamar. It has a medieval core but has been thoroughly rebuilt. The structure is made of stone rubble and granite ashlar. It features three spans, with an additional flood span and two tall cutwaters that end in refuges. The arches spring from plain imposts; the central arch is slightly pointed while the outer arches are rounded. The arch rings are made of granite and are slightly recessed, and the bridge is constructed of granite ashlar below the imposts. The flood arch is likely an addition, as a granite string course above the arches does not continue above the flood arch, which is separated from the main spans by a buttress. There is a granite milestone in the center of the bridge marked "L 2," indicating that Launceston is 2 miles away. This bridge is a notable example of a large medieval structure.
