Description

Laburnum Cottage is an 18th-century house, originally incorporating a bakery and shop to the rear. The roof was re-roofed in 1913. The house is constructed of cement-washed slatestone rubble and cob walls, with a scantle slate hipped roof and a brick chimney. It has a central stair plan and a double-depth, two-room layout.

The south front is symmetrical with three windows. A central doorway and ground floor window are now within a 20th-century glazed porch. There is a six-pane sash window to the right. Wooden lintels are visible above the original openings. The first floor has four-paned horned sash windows.

The rear is irregular; however, the street-facing entrance front retains an original doorway positioned slightly right of centre, along with an 18-pane former shop window to its right and an original doorway to a baker's shop extension with a lower roof line. A doorway to the left, with a 20th-century glazed door and slated hood on brackets, is probably a later addition. A 12-pane horizontal sliding sash window is located midway on the stairwell, with a similar window to the first floor to the right, and a 16-pane sash window to the first floor of the extension. The corner wall is splayed, seemingly to allow carriage access, and features a tall step, possibly a former mounting block. On the east side, there is a wide ground floor window with a pair of eight-pane sashes and a further 16-pane sash above. Timber lintels are present over the original openings.

Internally, the building retains some original features including bread ovens, an original dog-leg staircase, some 18th-century two-panel doors, and 18th-century niches with shaped shelves in the right-hand front room.
