Description
The property comprises a 1581 house with adjoining outbuilding, altered in approximately the late 18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, with slate hanging to the front above the ground floor, and has a slate roof with hipped ends. Stone rubble side, rear, and end stacks feature brick shafts.
The original plan of the house is uncertain, but it appears to have been of an 'L' shape, initially featuring a three-room and cross-passage arrangement. The right-hand room was originally heated by a lateral stack, with a staircase behind the passage. A corridor at the front left side provided access to an unheated dairy and a kitchen heated by an end stack, the original heating for which might have been provided by a projecting rear lateral stack. A large room to the front left wing, also heated by a lateral stack, was later extended by the addition of an early 19th-century outbuilding. The rear elevation features at least two straight joints, and the ceiling height and partition placement suggest alterations to the layout since 1581.
The two-storey front elevation has an asymmetrical arrangement of one window on the side and three across the front. A granite four-centred arch with carved balls in the spandrels and ball and stepped stops frames the entrance to the left of centre. The lintel is carved with 'ANOD. 1581.C.T. VYNCENT'. A 20th-century door sits within the arch, flanked to the left by a 19th/20th-century 12-pane sash and to the right by a 19th-century 24-pane sash and door opening. The first floor features two replacement 20-pane sashes and one 19th-century 24-pane sash to the right. The left-hand wing has 19th-century 20-pane sashes on both ground and first floors. A lower two-storey barn is attached to the front right, featuring a 19th-century plank door in the centre, a window opening to the left, and 20th-century garage doors to the right. There are three small ventilation openings on the first floor of the barn.
Inside, there’s an early 19th-century staircase to the rear of the passage. Doors are from the 18th and 19th centuries. Ceiling beams dating to approximately the late 18th century, with bowtell moulding, are largely covered; fireplaces have 20th-century grates. The first floor and roof were not inspected. A memorial to Thomas Vincent of Battens (died 1606) is located in the Church of St Torney.
