Description
Sandhill Cottage is a house dating from the late 18th century, built by a Mr. Higgins. The front and left side are finished with slate hanging, and the roof is hipped with grouted scantle slate. A brick chimney is located over the left-hand wall, and there are cast-iron ogee gutters. The house has a double depth plan, featuring two equal-sized rooms at the front with an entrance hall that leads to a rear stair hall. There may be an integral room plan wing at right angles behind the left-hand room, along with a slightly later two-storey kitchen outshut behind the right-hand room, separated by a thick axial wall, and a later lean-to at the right-hand end. The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window south front and a central doorway. The doorway possibly features the original or 19th-century six-panel door, with the top panels later glazed. The windows are likely original 16-pane hornless sashes. Inside, there is some original joinery, but most features date from the mid to late 19th century.
