Description
Riviere Cottage is a house and former poorhouse, dating to circa 1790, with remodelling in the early 19th century. The lower portion of the walls is granite ashlar, while the upper walls are stuccoed. The roof is long and hipped, covered with scantle slate tiles secured with a grouted finish, with wide eaves. Brick chimneys are located over a cross wall near the centre of the building and at each end.
The house originally comprised a long range of four rooms. It was probably initially two rooms, later extended with a central stair hall projecting at the rear as well as a pair of cottages to the right and a wing set at right angles to the rear of the middle section. Possible later outshuts are present at the rear on both the left and right, along with a lean-to structure between the stair projection and the rear wing. The windows are in a Gothic style.
The south front has an overall regular facade of seven windows. The left side has a symmetrical arrangement of three windows, while the right side is regular with four windows, featuring a doorway positioned under the second window from the right. The entrance has a 19th-century panelled door and ornate cast-iron porch. The window openings are four-centred arched and contain circa early 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars and traceried heads.
The entrance hall, the only part inspected, features 19th-century panelled doors and an early 19th-century dog-leg staircase with a mahogany handrail. It is reported that the remainder of the house has seen little alteration since the 20th century.
