Description

St Dominick House is a detached house dating from the early to mid-19th century, situated adjoining the town wall. The exterior is stuccoed over rubble, with a mid-floor band to the front, slate-hanging to the left-hand return, and a rag slate roof with a hipped return on the left. Overhanging eaves feature cast-iron ogee gutters, and there are brick end stacks. The house follows a double-depth plan and has a nearly symmetrical three-window front. Original twelve-pane hornless sash windows are present to the front and rear elevations, with a round-arched sash window on the rear staircase landing. The left-of-centre doorway features a six-panel door and two-pane overlight, contained within a late-19th-century latticed wooden porch with a basket-arched entrance and tented lead roof. The rear elevation is three-bayed, with a central, round-headed stair window and later 19th and 20th-century extensions.

The interior remains largely intact, including much of the original joinery. A staircase has stick balusters, column newels, and a mahogany handrail. Other original features include panelled doors, moulded architraves, panelled window shutters, and chimneypieces with original grates. Moulded ceiling cornices are also present.

Subsidiary features include rubble walls with granite copings, wrought-iron railings over the front wall, and a central gateway with a pair of square gate piers surmounted by squat pyramidal caps.
