Description

Churchtown Cottage is a house and small cottage that has been converted into a single residence. The main house dates from around the mid 17th century and was partly remodeled in the mid 18th century, likely at the same time the small cottage was added to the right. The building is constructed of stone rubble and features a rag slate roof with hipped ends. The cottage on the right has a slate roof that is hipped on the left and has a gable end on the right. There is a projecting stone rubble lateral stack at the rear left.

The layout of the house consists of two rooms, likely with a through passage. The left room is heated by the rear lateral stack, while the right room was originally heated by an end stack. In the mid 18th century, the house was extended with outshots across the rear and possibly included a small one-room cottage on the right. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, part of the house was used as a shop. By the mid 20th century, the cottage on the right was incorporated into the house, with the ground floor being used as a garage.

The exterior is two storeys high with a regular front of three windows to one. The left side of the house has two late 19th-century canted bay windows at the far right and left. There is a 20th-century window to the left of centre and a 19th-century six-panel door to the right of centre, which has a slate surround and slate hood. Above the door are three 20-pane sash windows that were renewed in the 20th century. The former cottage on the right features a 12-pane sash window on the first floor and garage doors on the ground floor. The house is located on the north side of the village green.
