Description
ST CLETHER SX 28 SW 4/185 Threshing barn 30 metres to north - east of Basil Manor and waterwheel approximately 50 metres to east of barn
GV II
Threshing barn with mill machinery and water wheel. Probably late C18 with earlier origins. Stone rubble. Slate roof with gable ends. Plan: Overall rectangular plan barn with threshing floor on first floor. Built into the bank with direct access to first floor from rear. The mill machinery is accommodated on the ground floor, below the threshing floor and to right with a pair of millstones which were probably originally in an outshut on front, the roof of the outshut now gone and the stones and associated shafts are now standing in the open. The machinery was powered by a large water wheel some 50 metres below the barn; the iron rods which connected the wheel to the machinery are insitu; an unusual survival. Exterior: Two storeys. Front elevation of barn is of two storeys with the remains of several outshuts in front. Wide threshing doors on first floor to right and two reset circa C19 timber mullion and transom windows with Perpendicular traceried lights to left. Pair of millstones directly to front. The left hand side elevation has C20 doors on ground floor and circa C19 timber mullion and transom window with Perpendicular traceried light above. Rear elevation partly built into bank with direct access to first floor with two wide doors. Lean-to outshut on right hand end. Interior: The mill machinery has been partitioned off for safety and was not accessible. C19 floor joists and circa early C19 roof with principals partly halved, lap-jointed and pegged and bolted. Collars lap-jointed and pegged and bolted onto face of principals. The water wheel below the barn is of overshot hybrid type and appears to have complete timber buckets.
