Threshing Barn 30 Metres To North East Of Basil Manor And Waterwheel Approximately 50 Metres To East Of Barn

This is a threshing barn located 30 metres to the northeast of Basil Manor and approximately 50 metres east of a waterwheel. The barn likely dates from the late 18th century but has earlier origins. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate roof with gable ends.

The barn has an overall rectangular plan, with a threshing floor situated on the first floor. It is built into a bank, allowing direct access to the first floor from the rear. The ground floor houses mill machinery, including a pair of millstones that were probably originally located in an outshut at the front, which is now missing. The mill machinery was powered by a large water wheel located 50 metres below the barn, and the iron rods connecting the wheel to the machinery are still in place, which is an unusual survival.

The barn is two storeys high. The front elevation features the remains of several outshuts, with wide threshing doors on the first floor to the right and two reset 19th-century timber mullion and transom windows with Perpendicular traceried lights to the left. The millstones are positioned directly in front. The left side elevation includes 20th-century doors on the ground floor and a 19th-century timber mullion and transom window with a Perpendicular traceried light above. The rear elevation is partly built into the bank and has direct access to the first floor through two wide doors, along with a lean-to outshut on the right-hand end.

Inside, the mill machinery has been partitioned off for safety and was not accessible. The barn features 19th-century floor joists and an early 19th-century roof with principals that are partly halved, lap-jointed, and both pegged and bolted. The collars are also lap-jointed and pegged onto the face of the principals. The water wheel below the barn is of the overshot hybrid type and appears to have complete timber buckets.
