Description

A probable 17th-century farmhouse with an attached 18th-century shippon, located in West Carne. The building is constructed of stone rubble with a rag slate roof and gable ends. It features a stone axial stack to the right of the centre and a brick shaft to a projecting stone rubble end stack on the right. The farmhouse is built down a slope, with the ground rising to the left, and the shippon is attached on the higher left side, forming an overall rectangular plan. The house is unusual in its 3-room arrangement, with the entrance leading directly into the central room, next to the axial fireplace. The left-hand room appears unheated, the central room is heated by an axial stack, and the lower right-hand room is heated by an end stack. The shippon is likely an 18th-century addition to the farmhouse.

The two-storey farmhouse has an asymmetrical 4-window front, with the ground sloping down to the right. The entrance is near the centre, with a plank door and a 3-light window. A C20 door has been inserted to the left. A small window is directly to the right of the entrance, followed by a 2-light window to the right. On the first floor are a 2-light casement with removed glazing bars, a 19th-century 2-light casement, and two 20th-century windows to the right. The single-storey shippon, attached to the left, is set slightly forward and has two entrances with a stable-type door on the right, flanking a window opening. The central room of the house has wany chamfered floor joists and a roughly chamfered timber lintel over the fireplace. The lower right-hand room and roof structure were not inspected.
