Description

Farmhouse and attached shippon, likely dating from the 18th century, with possible use of earlier materials. The front wall is of granite ashlar with a moulded granite string and painted stone rubble above. The side and rear walls are of stone rubble, partly slate hung and rendered, with a rag slate roof and stone rubble end stacks. The original plan was of two rooms with a cross or through passage, both rooms heated by end stacks. The house was extended to the rear in the 19th century to create a double-depth plan. A shippon was attached to the lower right-hand end around the late 18th or early 19th century. The site slopes down to the right, with the house on the left and the outbuilding on the right.

The front of the farmhouse is symmetrical with three windows and features fine quality granite ashlar masonry below the first floor. To the left of the entrance, large granite blocks alternate with deep stretchers and narrower headers, while the masonry to the right of the entrance is more uniform with smaller granite blocks. Dressed granite and Polyphant stone voussoirs frame the ground floor window openings, with a moulded granite string above. The central entrance has a circa 19th century open porch, the sides of which have been infilled in the 20th century and now possesses a 20th-century door. Two 20th-century three-light windows are in the original ground floor openings, and there are three 20th-century windows on the first floor.

The attached shippon is of two storeys, with a plank door near the centre, flanked by tall, narrow ventilation slits and a second plank door to the left.

Internally, the ground floor partitions of the farmhouse were altered in the 19th and 20th centuries; a stair was inserted in the passage, and a second passage was formed by partitioning the left-hand room. An unheated central room has been created by dividing and partitioning the right-hand room. The left-hand room contains a moulded round granite arch with incised 'V' patterns, which has been reset into the recess adjoining the fireplace. The left-hand room also has granite ashlar jambs to the fireplace. The ceilings are plastered. The roof structure was not inspected.
