Description

The Old Vicarage is a house dating from around the early 17th century, originally serving as a vicarage and now a private residence. The construction incorporates stone rubble and cob, with the front elevation finished with rag slates. It features a rag slate roof with gable ends and projecting stone rubble end stacks, along with a projecting side lateral stack. The original plan likely comprised two rooms and a through or cross passage, with each room originally heated by end stacks. Extensions to the left-hand room, possibly occurring in the early to mid-17th century, created a kitchen with its own side lateral stack, resulting in an 'L' shaped plan overall. An outshut was added to the rear of the left-hand room and passage, potentially in the 18th century, incorporating a circa 19th-century staircase at the rear of the passage. The front elevation presents an almost symmetrical appearance with three windows and is clad in rag slates. The central entrance is a 19th-century six-panel door set within a late 19th or 20th-century brick porch, featuring a rounded chamfered arch and a slate roof with a gable end. A late 19th or 20th-century four-pane sash window is on the left, and a late 19th or 20th-century bay window with four-pane sashes is on the right. The first floor contains three small 19th-century two-light casement windows. The interior is entirely fitted with 19th-century fixtures and fittings, including a 19th-century staircase at the rear of the passage. The kitchen at the rear of the left-hand room has a blocked fireplace; the owner reports a significant piece of blue elvan stone forming part of a large fireplace behind it. The first floor was not inspected.
