Description
STOWE C.P. WESTON SO 37 SW 11/180 - Barn approx. 10m south-east of Weston Farmhouse GV II
Barn. Late C17 with water-powered threshing machine added c.1921. Corrugated- iron clad timber frame on rubblestone plinth, carried up to north gable end, which is weatherboarded on first floor; corrugated iron roof. 2 levels. Doorways to left, right and centre with 2 slightly raking eaves dormers to centre on west side. Threshing entrance to rear has remains of rectangular structure to right housing large iron wheel with wooden paddles, made by the foundry of J. Mills and Co., Llanidloes in 1921. This appears to have been powered by water obtained from stream to east through underground pump, which regulated by small wheel, drew water up and then dropped it over wheel. Interior. Framing largely concealed by hay at time of resurvey (September 1986) but apparently much renewed. Single-purlin roof in 7 bays has raking struts from tie beams to principal rafters, except for first and second trusses from south which are of collar and tie beam type. Small wheel connected to outside wheel probably associated with former threshing machine.
