Description

This barn, located approximately 10 metres south-east of Weston Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century and features a water-powered threshing machine added around 1921. The structure has a timber frame clad in corrugated iron, resting on a rubblestone plinth that extends to the north gable end, which is weatherboarded on the first floor. The barn has two levels and includes doorways on the left, right, and centre, along with two slightly raking eaves dormers positioned centrally on the west side.

At the rear, there is a threshing entrance that contains the remains of a rectangular structure to the right, which housed a large iron wheel with wooden paddles, manufactured by J. Mills and Co. in Llanidloes in 1921. This wheel was powered by water sourced from a stream to the east, using an underground pump regulated by a small wheel that drew water up and released it over the wheel.

Inside, much of the framing was concealed by hay during the last survey in September 1986, but it appears to have been largely renewed. The single-purlin roof spans seven bays and features raking struts from the tie beams to the principal rafters, except for the first and second trusses from the south, which are of the collar and tie beam type. There is also a small wheel connected to the outside wheel, likely associated with the former threshing machine.
