Description

Lower Lye Farmhouse is a mid-17th and late 17th century farmhouse, with later additions and alterations, situated in Bucknell. The farmhouse is constructed from limewashed uncoursed limestone rubble with flat slabs, and has a corrugated iron roof. Originally a single-cell, baffle-entry plan, it was extended in the late 17th century to form a three-room layout. The building is one storey with an attic. The front features three 19th-century casement windows on the ground floor and two raking eaves dormers, the one on the right being larger with leaded lights. A boarded door is located on the left, and another is in a corrugated iron lean-to against a large external rubblestone end stack on the right. There is an integral rubblestone end stack to the left. Inside, the ground floor contains three rooms, with a timber-framed cross wall – featuring large square panels with visible woven infill – separating the centre and right rooms. The centre room has a further timber-framed spine wall dividing it. The right ground-floor room has a chamfered cross-beam ceiling and heavy joists, while the other ground-floor rooms have chamfered spine beams and heavy joists. A three-light leaded mullion window is on the back wall of the right ground-floor room, and an 18th-century oak staircase is located in the front of the centre room. Plank doors are found throughout the property. The roof structure comprises collar and tie beams in three bays, with a cambered tie beam to the right gable end.
